(Cartoon Credit http://skyrope.files.wordpress.com/2008/05/fish-eat-fish.jpg)"Everything is Maya". A Quote from my ex boss during one of his conversations with us. How true it is, it took me a decade and an unexpected event in my professional life to realize this.
Last few weeks have been an emotional upheaval of sorts, it was a tough time at work, most of us knew some sort of staff rationalization is coming and were trying our best to safeguard our teams. This team has done some great work throughout the year and unfortunately some were not in projects (though they were till recently) or were focusing on other development work asked of them. Thanks to the larger scheme of things and the so called rules within, all efforts to help the young and enthusiastic team did now work. The day when most of them were told they were no longer physical.
This futile exercise to safeguard the good people was a lesson to me personally. It showed who the real leaders were, who can be depended. Especially when favours were asked to be returned. People who benefited from the work of these young team members feigned ignorance of their existence, or acted as if they were trying to help, while dragging their feet and giving false hopes. While few others when reached out with identified opportunity/idea acted as if they were helping while in the meantime leveraged it to their benefit or to the benefit of those close to them.
What was also true was the reaction of some of the leaders and how they reacted and leveraged the situation. One great advice form one of the leader was to be clinical about this exercise. (Now he is reacting adversely because its his turn and some one else was clinical. )
While few others try to leverage the situation to their political benefits by getting rid of potential competitions and threat, rather than trying to retain what is good for the organization. What was interesting was some one up above in the hierarchy had different plans for these leaders too.
This whole exercise reminded me of the fish eat fish cartoon, shown above.
What left me thinking and contemplating was the futility of exercise. Basically it left me feeling like an "insignificant speck in the larger scheme of things".
on the lighter side
"A priest and bus driver died on the same day .They go to heaven and meet st. Peter standing before pearly gates. He allows the bus driver to go to one of the highest heavens but the priest is asked to wait.He waits for long time and finally goes to st. Peter and asks: "Why could that bus driver go to the highest heaven and I, who all my life spoke about God, have to wait for such a long time?"St. Peter said: "When you were speaking to the people at your church everybody was sleeping, but when that bus driver was driving everybody prayed!"
Similarly, with the submission of a letter this promoter of an organization excelled what all television Evangelists and gurus in making 40000 people turn philosophical. I am one in the 40000
